We decided that we wanted a little bit more sun before the start of fall, so we packed our tent and stuff and drove to Saint Tropez on the Côte d'Azur (SE coast).
It was a long drive, but the landscape was beautiful. Unfortunately it was raining a bit. Man are those French freeways annoying! You have to stop every half hour or less to pay expensive tolls! We set up our tent in the same place as where Seth and Paul Keady had been in 1998 when they had biked from Genova to Marseille. Since it was the end of the season, we were only about 4 tents in the whole campground. Kind of weird. On the first day the weather was not too good so we just walked around St Tropez. It's a cute town but there are just too many 10 million-dollar yachts with helicopter landing pad, and too many Gucci-Prada-Chanel stores for us. So we watched men play boccia on the main plaza for a while. serious business!
On the second day the weather was nicer so we went for a hike in the massif des Maures. Beautiful! The landscape reminds of Norcal. In the evening we wanted to go back to our usual restaurant. Since we are too cheap to buy wine in the restaurant we first stayed in the car for a while taking a nice wine apéritif with the windows down and the music on full blast. Fun, but when we fnally came out of the car and realized that the restaurant was closed and that all the people there were invited to a wedding, we felt pretty silly. Next day was beach day. The sun was shining and the water was still warm. We went swimming and read a lot. afterwards we terrorized half of the beach (I'm still not better at it) with our frisbee. Eh... Seth was also happy to see that French beaches still had as many topless sunbathers. Unfortunately at this season the average age is probably 55...
So that was a nice and relaxing time and we got a little tan before winter. More thumbnails ...
