The way back to Bangkok
Entry 29 of 51 | show all | print this entry |
Together with our friends Hailey, Rich and Ally we started the long trip back to Bangkok. We first took a bus to Vang Vien, north of Vientiane, where we celebrated Ally's birthday. Vang Vieng is the one and only party town in Laos. Most people go there to float down the river on an inner tube after being thoroughly intoxicated by beer, happy shakes and Co. Since we were still a bit sick we decided that a fun night out in a bar would be enough. It was quite eventful since Ally got hit on very insistently by some weird guy who ended up showering Rich and me with beer. Then at some point when I was dancing by myself I got surrounded by a horde of Ladyboys who got a little too close to me. Afterwards we went to the island bar, a cool bar made of little bamboo huts set in the middle of the river. We had a good time chatting until 4 am by the fire. The next day we took off in a bus. We were all ready to leave when the bus went to pick up people in a private house: it was the group of ladyboys from the previous night. They were even more colorful by day. The bus ride was beautiful. We went through the southern lao mountains. They rise from the valleys with very steep cliffs and are covered with dens jungle. In the evening we arrived in Vientiane, the capital city located along the Thai border, where we had to xchange bus. This was kind of disorganized but it ended up working out. That bus brought us to the brder where we had to go through immigration. When it was finally my turn to show my passport the woman looked at it, then disappeared with it for about 10 minutes without telling me why. I was getting a bit woried. You never know in a place like that. But then she reappeared and everything was ok, but no explanation. On the Thai side a beautiful bus took us all the way to Kosan Road in Bangkok. That's the place where all the backpackers hang out. It's kind of a Disneyland/Shoppingmall tailored for tourists. We arrived at 4 am and crashed in a pretty yucky hotel with dirty green walls. At 5 am we woke up to the sound of the national anthem bleared through powerful loudspeakers hanging right above our window. That makes me feel patriotic...
Next day hang out in Bangkok and bought our tickets to Myanmar. At night we met Claus, Boon, Jens and Lars at the Night Market for some food. It was nice seeing them again, and the food was delicious as always. AFter a short night we got up the next morning and said our goodbyes from our friends. It was hard after travelling with them for so long and sharing so many great moments, but I guess that's how it works...
On to Myanmar.
