Lake Como, Italy
Tuesday, Sep 19, 2006

Nestled in the Southern Alps and kissed by the snow-capped mountains, Varenna is definitely la Perla del Lago di Como, or the Pearl of Lake Como. With a population of 800 people, this town is easily accessible by train 45 minutes north of Milan. Even the train ride offers a breathtaking vista of pristine alpine lakeside charm.

So different from the rugged beauty of the Amalfi Coast or the elegant charm of Capri, Varenna offers another dimension to the natural allure of Italy. Like a blue pearl pressed between the lake and mountains, this small, tranquil medieval town took the rush out of my travel and made me feel relaxed and light-hearted. So charismatic were the small winding alleys between pastel-colored walls that I actually enjoyed getting lost in this town. Quiet passageways along the lake, nursed by the cool breezes, offered tourists a first-class panorama of the majestic Southern Alps. I was so moved by this corner of Heaven that I would have to return some day to explore the entire region in detail.
