Amalfi Coast, ITALY
One of the most spectacular coastlines in the world. Just one hour by train from Naples lies la Costiera Amalfitana, or the Amalfi Coast: a winding, rugged coastline with medieval villages bunny-hopping down the craggy slopes to the Mediterranean Sea. Easily accessible by the Circumvesuviana train from Naples' Central Station, Sorrento is a jet setter's high-end Mediterranean resort town full of brand name boutiques and elegant dining. It is also the starting place to spread out to small medieval villages along the sea.
With this information in mind, I went with Jana to Sorrento, where Lucia and Carlo were spending their honeymoon. I was overwhelmed by the sheer natural beauty of seaside villas dotting the 500-ft cliffs in the distance. The overcast sky did not taint the charming landscape at all. We took the boat ride along the coastline to Amalfi, where an ancient cathedral adorned the town center. Because of rough sea conditions, I almost had a bout of gastrointestinal retrograde expulsion. Luckily nothing happened.
The 60 minute bus ride back to Sorrento along the circuitous 500-ft cliff drops was equally challenging to my vestibular system. Vertigo and nausea were interspersed with unrestrained joy at watching the dramatic landscape!
