So, we were on our way to Strasbourg, France and we were passing by this German city called Saarbrucken which was a tiny spot on our large scale map. We were eager to reach Strasbourg and had no intentions whatsoever to stay there.
As we were passing by, we saw a market by the side of the road and decided to stop by and buy some cheese and bread. In the cheese line, this long haired guy came up to us and started asking questions about our bicycles and our trip. Five minutes later, we were sitting at a pub with Tom's friends, sipping on some good German beer (Bitburger) while we were easily convinced to camp in Tom's garden 20 minutes outside of the city.
The following 3 days, we exchanged cycling stories with Tom and ate Svenka meat cooked on a Svenka by a Svenka (crazy Germans!), drank a lot of beer (surprise, surprise) and watched the fireworks that our two neighbors lit up in our honor (crazy Germans!). Tom, being one of the crazy Germans himself, has traveled around the world with his bicycle and I mean in real hardcore places like Africa and the Middle East.
Tom told us that we could stay at his place for as long as we wanted. He said when he traveled, he met a lot of good people who helped him out and now it was his turn. "I know that one day you will pass it on" he said.
We will, indeed.
