Although we got an amazing fare on our Viva Macau Airlines flight from Macau to Jakarta, you do get what you pay for. You had to pay extra for EVERYTHING on board the aircraft, including pillows($3.50), blankets($4.50), and water($1.25). About the only thing that was free was toilet paper! But hey, at this point we'd rather pay a cheap fare and choose if we want to buy the dodgy in-flight cuisine instead of being forced to pay for it by having a higher ticket price.
We weren't really sure of our exact itinerary as we landed in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. One thing we did know is that we didn't want to spend much time in a smoggy and rather charmless mega-metropolis when there are places like Bali just a few hours flight away. So the first thing we did upon waking up the next morning was to find a local travel agent to book our flight to Bali. This trip has really reinforced to us how ridiculous the extortionate last minute pricing of airline tickets is in the USA. Just for perspective sake, we purchased our tickets to Bali (a 1½ hour flight) only seven hours before the plane departed and the one-way fare including taxes was $45.00!!!
Anyway, we are still getting our bearings here and falling into the island vibe. After a night in a tired and worn hotel right next to a highway we moved to a super nice place right on Sanur Beach as a slightly belated 2nd anniversary gift to each other. We'll be in Bali for over a week so look out for a more complete post with pictures within a few days.
