When we arrived at "Inn Waimea", I was half asleep already. We quickly washed ourselves and dozed off immediately when we hit the pillows.
However, it didn't take long before we heard...Oh oh, what's that sound outside of our window? 3am, 4am, 5am, 6am...every 5 minutes, there's "ohhhhOHHHHOhhhhhhhh" chirping from? A Hawaiian male chicken! Many thanks!! After our extremely exhausting 21-hour journey, a delayed flight, a long drive in pitch-darkness, a sleepless male chicken from Hawaiian relentlessly greeted us with his first warm "aloha!"! He's right outside of our window, tirelessly chirping, punctually, every 5 minutes, very accurate and precise between every 5 minutes. I counted in bed, 30 seconds, 60 seconds... then it's him again. My goodness! Am I going to get some rest after such a long journey? We closed all the window as tight as we can and it's a little better
I was really pissed at that male chicken, still. He also unveiled the reason behind why each passenger on the plane has to fill that form, which prohibited anyone from bringing in any live animal or plant into Hawaii. Because the "diligent" Hawaiians probably sloely depend on these male chickens to wake them up every morning! By preventing anyone from bringing in other animals, for example, a female chicken, to distract the male chicken from working hard/normally. Do the male chickens in Hawaii ever sleep? Probably not. Not in need of female company, they are living a pretty simple life, completely enjoying their honored reputation as the "broken clocks of Hawaii".
It was really miserable to be woken up so early after 21-hr-journey, at 3am in the morning. Still half-asleep, we showered ourselves and set off for "Waimea Canyon", the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific".
Before getting into the canyon, we decided to go farther up to Kalalau Lookout" and the view was breathtaking (see pictures). From this lookout, you got a first taste of the heavenly Napali Coast.
It was amazing. The Waimea canyon is a better version of grand, bryce, arch...canyons combined.

. Too tired, we fell asleep again until, 7:30am, our real alarm bursted. I was really pissed at that male chicken, still.
