The 'O' key on my laptop is fucked. I think something is stuck under it because I have t practically bash it with a hammer t get it to wrk.

There we go. Pried it off and got it to work. There was a seed underneath it. Hm. I don't know how it got there.

Realised while I transferred in Houston that I'd forgotten a few things.

My face scrubber. Phone charger. Medication. I don't know if my glasses are in my suitcase or not. I'll look in the morning. I get the feeling I'm forgetting something else too but at the moment I can't think of it

Tomorrow when I can think straight I'll do a recap of the days I've missed and upload some pictures, but for the moment you've just bland ol' sleep deprived text that I can actually concentrate on writing without having American's with cute accents all around me.

Anyway, let me paint you a picture, because I need to describe this. I've never felt so much like an adult (especially with everyone calling me Ma'am and Miss--expect for the hotel reservation which for some reason said 'Mr' instead of 'Miss' which amused the hell out of me).

So, I'm sitting at my desk in my room which is glued to the wall, window perpendicular. It's a nice big window with a shade that will block the hell out of the sun when it thinks about rising. There's a building right in front of me, looks like office spaces, or another hotel, hard to tell since all I can see is the dimly lit hallways through their wall-like windows. In the right hand corner of the window there's flashing neon lights for some shops. Looks like take out.

Anyway, I'm sitting here, at this desk, looking out the window which has the reflection of me and my laptop screen in it and city beyond.

The clincher?

Smoking room.

I have an ashtray and a slowly burning cigarette next to me. Never been able to do that before. there's a vent up in the ceiling of the room above the door that sucks the air in pretty quick. Keeps the smell down.

I can lay in bed and smoke at the same time as I watch Animal Planet with Arabic subtitles. Awesome.

Moving on.

I had an interesting experience in the Dubai airport. They have these toilets that are similar to ones I know are in Japan. The toilet seat is level with the ground, and the bowl is underground, like a mini pool. I figured the idea was to squat over it like you would in the bush. Still, I like my toilets sitable.

I don't think I've once had to flush a toilet myself expect for at my friends houses. You stand up and all of a sudden they flush of their own free will. Freaked me the hell out the first time. Still never got used to it.

I went to another stall after a second of bemused staring.

The men in the Dubai airport were just a little intimidating, if only because they all were long white gown and the headwear that's typical of Arabic countries. Mind you, they were only intimidating because they all had five o'clock shadows and nice olive coloured skin and dark, smouldering eyes.

Yeah, yeah. Too much Mills & Boon. I know.

I can dream.

The man who picked me up from the airport was quite nice. In fact, exceedingly so. He had a card that said 'Miss Leah Atkinson' and I had a nice car and a driver all to myself. He pushed my luggage around. I felt like royalty, let me tell you.

Still, couldn't let my head get any bigger than it already is.

Got to the hotel and went to my room, realised I didn't have the right adaptor, went down tot he lobby and begged the hot Asian guy at reception for an adaptor and scissors to cut the security tags off my big suitcase. So now I have a whole 12 hours of broadband internet and my laptop set up. I think after I eat I'll be able to sleep well, since the cub with the broken pelvis on Animal Planet had me tearing up. I had to turn the TV off. Poor thing was dragging his back half around and struggling to keep up with its pride.

I tried before I went down and asked for the scissors and adaptor, but I was hungry and needed my fix of internet. Internet trumps hunger, apparently.

The drive to the hotel was amazing. It really shoved in my face that, oh hey, Leah, you're in what was once the Persian Empire. There was a hotel with six or seven storey tall Egyptian statues either side of the entrance, and KFC in Arabic every second block. So many lights and colours. I could see, at one point, the Burj Dubai. That thing is utterly huge.

And lit up purple.

Perhaps tomorrow I'll go hunting for a good view of it and take some photos. Once I wake up.

And write some of this Mills & Boon novella I'm working on, since it's punching me in the face with inspiration at the moment. Oh Sheiks and lands of oil and gold, how seductive and inspiring you are.

More later.

hey Leah dear. please don't smoke in bed! other than that, it sounds good. I just caught up on all ur travels (i'm on a 15.5 hr ferry to Italy). if u want, go to Dubai Mall (biggest in the world) and u can see the Burj Dubai and water fountain display at night.
oh, and i can't believe u had the guts to drive in the US! I'm still too scared to drive on the RHS...i can barely drive well on the LHS ;-)

I definitely want to go and see the fountains. I'll be happy if I can get a video of it.

It took me a bit to get used to driving on the LHS. Let me assure you that there was plenty of mistakes.

I haven't smoked in bed since that first time. I'm too worried I'll burn or dirty the sheets otherwise.

I'll catch up on your travels tomorrow, I'm heading off to bed now. Have fun!

We've found a few other things. Meant to ship them out today but ended up crashing again. Will send tomorrow so let us know if anything else is missing.
