Terry and Sherry drove me over the Mackinaw bridge so that I wouldn't have to the the ferry for another $33, so I ended up in St Ignace, fully fueled, and not having to backtrack. Pretty good deal!

The ride was an easy 50 miles along country roads to Sault Ste Marie, a border city built half in both countries. The bridge heading into Canada crosses over the Sault locks which separate Lakes Superior and Huron. One side of the river is flowing rapids while the other side is calm water, descending in a starlike manner into Lake Huron. Truly an amazing engineering feat.

One of the warmtshowers listings for Sault Ste. Marie is a bike shop called Velorution. They offer camping for touring cyclists in the back of their shop, with showers and a dirt track to boot. There, I met Dustin, a tourist from Alberta who has recently left his job in radio to do this trip. We got some drinks at a local bar and exchanged stories. Talking to him made me realize how lucky I have been; he had rain every day in Ontario, totaling nine days thus far.

We returned to the campground to find Yula (I think?), a tourist from Australia who started in Vancouver, same as Dustin. She is the first solo female tourist I have met, and she is young, around my age. Most of her experience touring has been in tropical climates such as Fiji, Australia, or at least coastal, like the Pacific coast of the US. Thus, crossing the plains of Canada took a toll on her, and she is feeling over touring for the moment. Understandably, I think.

We shared some drinks and stories around the campfire, made easy by the large supply of firewood left by Velorution, and went to bed.
