Spotty wifi didn't allow me to contact my possible warmshowers host until early this afternoon. Luckily, his profile says, 'text a day or so in advance (no phone number listed) or just show up. It's all good!' So I just showed up. His front Window was covered with a large Green Bay Packers blanket and the door was clearly only given a half-hearted single layer of paint. I knocked and he opened the door looking beyond disheveled with a slice of pizza in his hand, his mouth full of the same, and a movie playing quite loudly from the television
He finished chewing as we sat down on the couch to resume watching the movie, '42' as it turns out, the one about Jackie Robinson. It seemed to be a slow process for him to accept that there was another person in the room. At first, we watched the movie in silence as I familiarized myself with the surroundings: one bedroom home, bedroom upstairs, dirty kitchen, guitar and amp in living room, numerous bikes, speakers hung hastily from the wall, Xbox and DVD collection. I was back in college.
Eventually, Scot asked, 'what was your name again?' After some conversation, he began a tour of his home including laundry, shower, newly acquired (one day ago) dog, and backyard. Scot ran out to get milk, he is a caretaker for an elderly man in the area, and I was quite content playing his stratocaster for a while. It was clearly a beginner's guitar, as it had the number of each fret written in sharpie on the neck. Made me miss my guitar. I later went out for a 'fish fry', a tradition in these parts of frying up fish on Fridays in restaurants.
We spent the evening watching movies and chatting. Scot is middle aged, seems a bit down on his luck, and loves company. He has a host of truly sad stories about his life over the last ten years or so, including two divorces and a stepson's suicide. It turns out that the guitar I played belonged to his stepson, hence the sharpie. Scot didn't mind, said it was good to hear the guitar played again.
