This is the Costa del Sol of Laos full of bare chested travelers from UK, Australia etc. Full of bars selling cheap liquor literally by the bucket ( the buckets are pretty small). The bars all serve food the normal mix of burgers and curry. The beef and ale pie was good.

The reason for being in Vang Viang is the tubing. The young and the brave went off and drank their way home. The waterside bars provide cheap drinks, water slides, river swings, mud volleyball and mud wrestling. They all got back but there were a number of casualties and a lot of bruises not to mention headaches the next day. The tubing is incidental and not very fast or long. They didn't seem to have spent much time in the tubes. Most failed to finish the course and came home by tuk-tuk.

I went out to investigate the local town and ended up deep in a limestone cave with a lagoon. The walk through the fields lead to a cave and I really should have resisted the urge to go but I didn't. So with a mixed group of companions we set off underground - it turned out to take an hour to reach the lake and what no-one mentioned at the start was that it was necessary to wade through a waist deep lake/river to reach the lagoon! Luckily I wasn't wearing white but the usual mud green. It was tough walk which involved bamboo ladders, rock scrambles and a limestine floor pitted with sinkholes and platforms from years of water. I was glad to get a hand up from the others guys who were an international mix Japan, Austria and Sweden and of course they all spoke impeccable English. By the time I emerged from the cave I was not only very tired but filthy. It ws fun though.

The whole landscape in northern Laos is dominated by the limestone Karsts Which rise in sheer cliffs out of the river valleys.
