I woke up at 2:00am when Greg pulled into a gas station in Presho, SD. We slept until 5:30am. Gassed up and let Ky run around with her ball for a little while until we ventured back onto 90 to the Badlands. I asked Greg why he decided to drive through the night and he said "I saved you from a VERY boring state and with driving at night theres a lot less traffic." I thanked him for saving me. haha It was nice to watch the sun come up in our side view mirrors. South Dakota was horribly flat and boring until we got to the Badlands entrance 15 miles south of route 90. it was beautiful. I was amazed that South Dakota had the badlands. We got there around 7:00am. Of course we got out took our photos by the Badlands National Park sign and rip sticked a bit. :) I couldn't even comprehend the beauty of this place. The depths, colors and silence of the park was truly amazing and peaceful. I've never heard the sound of silence until the badlands. We stopped at a few small half hour trails that had some vegetation which meant when it rained the water stayed in those areas. We saw a few chipmunks and brown squirrels. We hiked The Notch Trail which apparently was intended to be difficult and take an hour and a half to two hour round trip to do. Let's just say Greg & I are super awesome and we did it in half an hour. Greg said the estimated times are intended for the elderly. The Notch Trail had a lot of cliffs and loose gravel. The end of the hike was by far rewarding. When you get to the top it's one of the best views in the park. You could see everything and it had the best breeze (as you can see in the photos). We had to rush because we had baby Ky in the truck. Once we finished the Notch trail we stopped and got our National Park Access Pass (a pass to get into every national park). We stopped at the information center and found out from one of the rangers that the government had intentions of closing all national parks. We didn't think it'd happen because it's just ridiculous. The adventure continued... We drove through the badlands and spotted some Prairie Dogs. They were so cute. My heart was set on finding a buffalo. No luck, just cattle. We thought about camping in the park but decided not to. Once we left the park we went to Wall Drug the ever so famous and annoying billboard attraction. :) We arrived at Wall Drug and took an hour nap in the truck. Wall Drug was filled with tourists. It was the ultimate souvenir outlet. haha We ate at Cactus Cafe. Greg had the special which was a piece of meat, which looked like a salisbury steak, covered in thick brown gravy with a side of mash potatoes. I had a chicken quesadilla with a side of mexican rice. The meal was mediocre. Once we left Wall Drug we made our way to Mount Rushmore. Once we got to Mount Rushmore we saw it from the main road but decided to go to the monument the next day. We traveled 20mins from the entrance of Mount Rushmore to find a campground. We came upon a KOA in the heart of the Black Hills. It was around 5:00pm when we decided to set up our tent and relax. We were both out by 8:30 watching Monsters Inc. The next day we talked about going to Mount Rushmore and then head to Glacier National. The adventure continues...
