Once I arrived back from Vis, had lunch and farewelled Kate and John I set off to wander around Split. I visited Dicoletian's palace (or what's left of it) which I found kind of fascinatingly creepy because there was hardly anyone there and I was wandering through these gigantic rooms that were dimly lit and smelt musty and very, very old. The part I liked the most about the palace was a small courtyard I found full of old leftover columns and statues. That evening I wandered out again but was sadly disappointed by the sheer number of tourists around and the cut and polished veneer of Split that makes it seem like just another international seaside tourist destination. But hey, the waterfront was a nice place, and I had fun wandering and fetting lost in the streets and trying the locally mde hamburger with this special tomato sauce with onions and some other special herbs and spices that was delicious and cost next to nothing! I was glad to be leaving the next morning though! It was off to Omis and the river Cetina for some white water rafting and then on to Dubrovnik on the bus Split - seafont

Unfortunately I don't have the photos of the whitewater rafting at the moment, but I can describe what it was like. The rapids were rather tame and a bit disappointing, but the owner of the outfit is married to an Australian woman and they now have a baby girl also - they met whitewater rafting! Anyway he was so entertaining! Warning everyone about the crocodiles in the river (I don't think anyone else got the joke except us), and he was wearing one of those fisherman caps with Australia written on the front. A great guy - he made the day! The river is just beautiful, crystal clear and while it's cold it was wonderfully refreshing to swim in after all that paddling! A bit further down the river there was a spot to jump off a rock shelf about 5 metres above the water. About 6 rafts were gathered around and people were lined up to jump - so of course I went too! Fantastic! Then I heard the strangest thing - people speaking English but with an accent I couldn't pick - not American, not English, ah it was Australian! Wow what music to my ears after not hearing it for so long, it's strange how it takes me awhile to pick it though! Anyway, there was this Australian woman at the top of the rock who was hesitating at jumping, and someone started clapping and chanting "come on Australia!" and then everyone was clapping and saying cheering her on until she finally jumped. Ha, it was a very funny experience!
