As some of you know about a month ago I spent ten days in Croatia - I travelled alone and wow what a liberating experience it was! I went without prebooking anything and just drifting along deciding what to do each on the day. Often I'd arrive at a place at 7 or 8 at night and not know where I was sleeping, but something would always turn up - perhaps I was lucky but I think that's just how things work when you let go of all the planning and timings and deadlines.

I took over 600 photos in Croatia so I'm going to give you a selection of what I consider to be the most interesting and descriptive of my experience. Unfortunately I haven't had access to a computer at home for awhile now so I apologise to anyone who's emails I haven't responded to.

Croatia is an amazingly beautiful country with clear blue seas and deep green forests, I fell in love with it the moment I arrived at the small Island of Vis First view of Vis

Instead of recounting everything I saw and did I'll try to focus more on my experience because I think that having spent time in Croatia alone was a life-changing experience I've never felt so free in my life!!

So I set of on the train a bundle full of nerves and wondering why on earth I'd decided to go off alone to a foreign country without having planned or prebooked anything. I didn't even have a proper travel guide like a lonely planet to help me out!
I spent the night on the ferry, in a bed in a room on my own, leaving at 9 at night and arriving at 7 am the next morning. It was a pleasant night, the only problem was there were a group of people in the corridor that perhaps had drunk too much and were banging on all the doors for awhile, but I slept well and arrived refreshed.
The first thing I did when I got off the boat was to go and have a coffee and find something to eat. On the way over I'd set up a plan in my head of everything I needed to do. Ie basic things like finding something to eat, finding out when the ferry for Vis was leaving and buy a ticket, try to book a couple of nights accommodation. Fortunately everything went very smoothly and soon enough two hours after I'd alighted the ferry in Split (from Italy) I was on my way on another ferry to the island of Vis Vis 2

On Vis I met a a couple from Canada (Kate and John) on a day trip to a small island nearby which has bright blue illuminated water inside and is originally called the blue cave. What a fantastic day it was, I spent the day with Kate and John first in the blue cave, then lazing on the beach and eating seafood and drinking beer. Then when we got back to the mainland we had a few more beers and then finished off the day eating more seafood and drinking wine. My ideal day! The conversation was interesting the food delicious and the surrounding environment extraordinary. We talked about how long it would take to become bored on Vis. I think I would need atleast a month to get tired of the way they live there. But maybe more ...
