An Unplanned Stop
Entry 3 of 17 | show all | print this entry |
A funny thing happened on the way to Barcelona... The SNCF train workers decided today was the day to strike (not that this is altogether unfrequent). It landed us in our stopover in Montpellier in the south of France, while our hostel reservation awaited in Barcelona. Fortunately, we ran into an American girl named Marie Claire who had just finished her study abroad in France, and was quite fluent. We were so confused (this being our very first rail experience). We rode first class (thanks Dad) from Paris to Montpellier, but with the strike, Marie Claire was able to find out that we would be taking a bus to Barcelona in the morning. Dad said, "and how do you feel about riding a bus to Spain?" Hmmmm... (Well, it was funny on the phone, we swear!) Anyway, Marie Claire´s presence probably saved us from a night in the ghetto of Montpellier! She brought along a wonderfully enthusiastic Brazilian friend, Gustavo. We roamed the picturesque downtown of Montpellier, took silly pictures, and ate a Big Mac... all this gourmet stuff was making us crave cheeseburgers. Ha ha! The hotel was a little stinky, with only one shower and toilet (minus the seat) for the entire hotel to share. Well, for 35 euro a night, you get what you pay for. Still, if you happen to be around Montpellier, we recommend stopping by for a visit (just find a better hotel). :-)
