For some unexplainable reason, I have always felt the need to put my feet on African soil. During a moment of self-reflection last fall, I realized my opportunity was this summer. The timing was perfect and if I did not go now, I feared I would never make it.  Sure, it would be great to wait until my husband could join me.  However, I have learned if you always wait for another person to share your adventures, your adventures may be fewer.  In addition, I cannot always wait for opportunities to present themselves, but have to create them myself.  So I began to plan. I knew I wanted to do more than travel. I wanted to experience as much of the culture and way of life as possible. I also wanted to make a difference. Initially, I contemplated a refugee camp, but Mike had his doubts....big doubts.  I began to research recommended countries for woman traveling alone as well as international volunteer organizations. After much investigation coupled with some gut-level decision-making, I chose Tanzania as my destination and decided to volunteer at an orphanage.  From July 1st to August 15th, I will be volunteering at the Hands of Mercy Children's home outside of Mwanza, Tanzania:

My primary responsibility at Hands of Mercy (or HOM as I have learned past volunteers call it) will be teaching.  The main goals are to extend the children's school day as well as teach them English. By learning English, the hope is the children will be able to create their own economic opportunities in the future.  In addition, I plan to help out in any way I possibly can.

I leave for Tanzania in a few days. I have had countless shots in the last six months and now possess a summer's worth of malaria pills. I've got my mosquito net and a Swahili book to cover every situation. I have chopped off my hair, shipped off my dog and kissed my husband good-bye. I am starting to have a little "justifiable anxiety" but am much more scared of not going than anything else. At this point, I am just ready to go.  I have spent nine months planning for this trip.  I have spent nine months explaining where Tanzania is located and what I will be doing for the summer. Now, I am ready to find out myself.
