As I had nothing pre planned for today's activities, tropical far north Queensland was essentially my oyster. After some serious consideration as to whether I should visit the Rainforest, go calm water cruising or catch a shuttle bus up to Port Douglas to catch the Sunday markets and lunch with old friend, I opted for the last option.

Once again I experienced a less that perfect nights sleep. I totally blame it on the group of what sounded like young men who for what ever reason decided to run up and down the hotel corridor at 1 am shouting 'ROOM SERVICE’. Thankfully, the rest of my day went relatively to plan.

After a quick post breakfast, pre bus journey nap, I boarded the Port Douglas shuttle bus for the hour and a bit ride along the James Cook Highway – a highway which although scenic is very bendy.

Once in Port Douglas, I headed straight to the markets to see the wares the locals were selling. As with most tropical markets, there was a mix between touristy stalls selling ‘Australia’ in the form of a wood carving/blown glass/print and stalls selling clothing suitable for the tropical climate.

While perusing the stalls I stumbled across a guy selling sugar cane juice. Naturally I though ‘hmm this could a good taste sensation and I should step outside the box and try some’. After my third mouthful I realised I should not have. While cool and slightly refreshing, the mix of lime, ginger and sugar cane juice was not a taste I wish to try to replicate. In all honesty, it tasted a little like cold Lemsip without the added sugar. Once I had gotten over the feelings of nausea, I headed down to the marina for lunch.

Lunch was lovely. There was talking, drinks were drunk and food was eaten. I had hot chippies and sauce for lunch and it certainly hit the spot. There is something fulfilling about the simple potato cut into strips and fried and tomato sauce.

After returning to my hotel it was time to prepare for my next flight. This required a mix of repacking, freshening up and getting side tracked by a Doctor Who episode.

With all my items repacked, I left the hotel and made my way to the airport for the next leg of my journey.

At the airport I caught up with the other people doing the dive trip with me and checked in for the flight.

Fact of the day: The airport at Cairns operates seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
