Ica is a small city in the middle of nowhere.
There is only one single reason to stop here on the way to Lima... Sand surfing!!!
The city has a lagoon called Huacachina. This lagoon is surrounded with HUGE sand lagoons and has an enormous desert nearby.
This desert is the place to have the best sand surfing experience in South America.
The experience begin with a buggy ride. A very EXTREME buggy ride... They take you from the city and drive like MADMAN through the desert to get to the top of a lagoon and start the sand boarding experience.
What you do is very easy actually.
You lie down on the sand board, push yourself over the edge and HOLD ON TIGHT. Some lagoons are huge and very scary to surf, others are easier.
Unfortunately we had an accident and 2 girls crashed. They were both taken to the hospital bleeding, which kind of ruined the otherwise perfect experience of sand boarding... I think they are both ok, I hope they made it with as least pain as possible.
Nevertheless - the experience was a lot of fun and worth the stop over in Ica!
Now on to Pisco to see lots and lots of birds!
