What I did
We went up so that we could eat lunch with her and had decided to make huatia. Huatia is where they basically just dig a hole and cook the potatoes in the ground. She had some grassy reeds so instead of the hole, she just made a mound of this and set it on fire. It took a while for it to turn to hot ashes, but once it did we put in the potatoes and beans and waited while Sao ran around smelling everything.
Earlier he'd been terrorizing a gimp rooster so Maria decided to go ahead and cook it. Unfortunately we didn't know she'd gone out to kill it so we don't have any pictures or a video or anything, but she made soup broth and we ate that as an appetizer to the huatia. She then took the rooster and fried it to accompany the huatia.
We also made the salsa to accompany the potatoes. It had a lot of stuff in it and she ground it with an old-fashioned metal grinder that hooked on to one of her benches. It was a mixture of cheese, peanuts, water, and herbs. The water can be substituted for milk, but we didn't have any so just did it with water.
It was all really good, but we were absolutely stuffed and barely made a dent. It was time to say goodbye, so we took Sao and discovered another road home! It's much prettier than the other dirt one (the one that goes up to my office) and even has a little stream running down it for most of the way.
