Flag of Hungary  , Lake Balaton,
Monday, February 6, 2012

Still in search of warmer weather (I don't think we are going to find it somehow!), we head to Lake Balaton, where the Hungarians go for holidays.

The lake is 77km long, between 3 and 14km wide in parts and on average 3-4m deep. However the lake was frozen solid! Not at all what we expected. We had seen photos of the Lake and the surrounding beaches, we were thinking it would be similar to the Gold Coast, we couldn't be any more wrong! After a drive through Siofok, the main tourist town resort we realised that this was definitely a summer place. Most places were closed.

Instead of sandy beaches, we saw a frozen lake where people were ice skating, playing ice hockey or simply sliding! The roads were incredibly icy once we left the motorway.

We had dinner in one of the few places open, where the waitress thought we were German and only spoke to us in German, even though we spoke English!
