But you'd better watch out if you want to play games with girls like Mia. Mia is a frightening girl, quite large and highly sexed. Referring to my barbequed chickens, she claims that she killed the birds using voodoo magic and in this way can kill anything she sees. She's joking of course, but I am no less wary of her. Her current boyfriend is Thomas. A completely hilarious man. Amazingly he's able to satisfy Mia even though he is over 70 years old. He spends most of his time travelling and likes this quiet corner of Indonesia the best. He, like many others in this area, will not tolerate being dictated to by Muslims - and tells some highly amusing tales.
Like when he bought a pig and took it to an area of Indonesia where Muslims predominate. He painted the pigs lips red with lipstick and wrapped its head in the 'hijab' - the traditional Muslim scarf. After painting the name Mohammed along the side of the animal, he marched into a mosque with ' his girlfriend ' - Mohammed the pig, on the end of a lead. And yes, it did spark a reaction. Needless to say, Thomas has been beaten up once or twice in Indonesia and spent some time in jail. He regrets none of it.
Another interesting chap is Dick. A bright and lively man who ran a business here on Samosir Island for some 17 years but has been forced to close up shop. Sumatra is just not attracting tourists anymore. He taught English and published a monthly tourist magazine and it made no difference in the end. He even converted to become a Muslim ! ( he says with a smile - probably not the only Muslim that eats bacon sandwiches either )
After many days of extremely pleasant relaxation on Samosir island, I regret that I must return to Medan. Sadly, my Indonesian visa-on-arrival is valid for a period not exceeding 30 days and then I must leave the country. There are no extensions of stay. Yet this strikes me as odd. In the current circumstances, Indonesia would do well to relax the 30-day restriction - to attract more free-spending visitors. Unlike Thailand, where it's quite easy to remain indefinitely, leaving Indonesia for the purpose of ' visa-runs ' is costly. There are no land borders.
