Day 3, and again we were all up at 6:00am because the bus was leaving at 6:30am.
Through out the journey the bus driver (Allen) played allot of Slim Dusty (famous oz singer) on the stereo. In Australia a cowboy is called a ringer, a gilaroo for a girl and a jackaroo for a man. It was not long before we crossed over the border in to the Northern Territory, this is the third state I have been to in Australia. I am also a half an hour closer to home. :-) On this day, the road was mostly just a dirt road. There was also a car rally from Sydney to Darwin in aid of charity for children on this road, which we were in the middle off. We even had to pull one of the rally cars out of the creek because it was stuck.
We had lunch up a side road. There were also massive trucks traveling on this road, they call them 'Road Trains' in Australia.
We then passed by Hells Gate and Hells Gate Roadhouse, which in the past was the last place the police guaranteed security, after this point western travelers were on there own. After this we drove to another national park with unusual and spectacular rock formations. While coming out of the park we noticed a fire at 5pm. It kept getting closer and closer to us and to where the bus was parked. Only half the people had made it back to the bus. So we started calling for them and beeping the horn. It was only about 20meters away from us when everyone was back. We all got away safely. I have to say even without the fire it was very hot in the outback. The real Australia.
We then drove to Cape Crawford, which used to be an inland ocean. We stayed at the Heart Break Hotel. It is called the heart break hotel because of the heart ache it caused to build it in such a remote location.
Again there was not much in this town, just a pub. We had a good dinner, with a mixture of things to eat (not lasagna). We all had a few beers in the bar and had a dance a little later. Through out the tour male and females were separated in the accommodation, but this night I had a room to myself and so did one of the German girls, but she did not want to sleep by herself, so he asked if she could sleep in my room. I said you of course. So from then on we became room mates. Well for one night anyway
