On Wednesday the 18th of July Arie and I met at the back entrance to the shopping mall where the train station is located. We got the scenic train at 9:30am to Kuranda. Kuranda is a village in the rain forest. The scenic train is just nice way to get there. Along the way you are told about the different tunnels, bridges, water falls, why it was build and who build it.
And all of this while been on an old style train passing through the rain forest :-) It was a great tour. It was first build to harvest the lumber in the area, which is a shame since they destroyed most of the rain forest. It was build by both Irishmen and Italian men. The things of interest along the tour was the 180 degree bend in the train track, in which you could look out of the train and see the other end going around the bend. Then it was on to Stoney Creek waterfall, which was a beautiful waterfall, with a fall of 43 meters. We later stopped at Barron Creek or Gorge for 10 minutes, to soak up the atmosphere. We reached Kuranda at around 11:30am.
It was a charming little village with many cafe's, gift shops and markets. But we did not come here to shop. While there Arie and I went on 2 jungle walks and a river bank walk. There were a couple of zoo's there, including a snake and spider zoo. On one of our walks we came across a bat rehabilitation center. The woman there was so friendly and she really loved those bats. We got the last train out Kuranda which was at 3:30pm. After our train journey we each went to our own hostels. That night I had an Indian curry for dinner. At the hostel I met and talked to the girl from Brisbane, 2 French guys and a German girl.
