On Saturday the 23rd of June was the day I left Beautiful Bowen. :-) I got up at 8:30am and had breakfast with Melisa (Belgium girl). We laught and joked about the night before. I then packed the rest of my bag and the hostel owner brought me, for a $10 free of course to the mobile station on Bruce highway in order to catch my bus at 9:30am.
The bus was going to Townsville, but nobody was staying in Townsville, since we were told that is a very boring place with no night life. So everyone on the bus including the driver was going to Magnetic island, which is an island of the coast of Townsville. We got the ferry at 2:00pm, which only took 25 minutes. It is called Magnetic island because when Caption Cook was sailing past the island he believed that his compass was affected by the ores on the island. Not true Mr. Cook. :-) Anyway, I stayed at Base Backpackers hostel, which was right on the beach, with nothing else around it. It was an OK hostel. It was a cloudy day when I arrived on the island, but still it was nice to be on a tropical island. I had to walk 2km to the nearest supermarket in order to make dinner.
I think from about 5pm until 12 that night the music in the bar can be heard all over the island. The whole hostel is set up for partying. They hold full moon parties here. In fact they were having one this Friday the 29th. You might have heard of full moon parties in Thailand. After dinner I rang my sister Helen and it was good to hear her voice after 3 weeks.
On Sunday the 24th I got up at 9:40am and got a free breakfast because I had booked 3 nights accommodation, also included in the 3 nights accommodation was free Kayaking for an hour and all day Snorkeling. It was the first time I had bacon and hash browns in a long time.. hummm, nice. Later I went on a bush walk called Arcadia. Which was a walk through the rain forest on the island. There is an animal called 'sunskink' that lives in the rain forest here, but I did not see one. It was a really nice walk though, very humid, I sweated allot. :-) Coming towards the end of my walk I finally seen one, written in the soil on the ground in capital letters was the word KOALA, with an arrow next to it. I looked up and there he was sitting in the tree asleep. Apparently it is very east to see Koala's here since the gum trees are not very tall.
I then walked to 'Spinxs' lookout in which there was an amazing view of Alma bay. (see photo). I eventually finished the walk after 4 hours and so I headed back to the bus stop which was near Geoffrey bay.
My hostel room had 8 people in it and the showers were separate to the room. I later had a drink in the hostel bar by myself. But I was only sitting outside near the beach for a while, when some girl just came up to me and touched her glass off mine and said cheers. :-) We chatted for a while, before asking the standard questions, like where do you come from, your name and how long are you in Australia. Her name is Shirley and she is from Israel. We arranged to go Kayaking and do the Forts bush walk the next day. We were to meet at 10:30am near the bar seating area. I later met 2 Swiss people (girl and boy) and a Swedish girl. I had a feeling that the Swiss boy was funny, and he was. :-)
