Tuesday the 29th was sailing day and I was very excited. The boat, 'The Condor' was sailing at 1pm but I had to be there a half an hour before it left the harbour. I bought only 6 cans of beers since my plan was to only drink one of the two nights. I had to pay an extra $33 for environmental cost and $15 for a stinger suit.
We were ready to go but the tide was out, so the boat could not sail into the pier. We got into groups of 8 people and rode out on a rubber dinnie. There were 26 people on the boat, half of them were English, 4 were Irish (me included), 2 Swedish and the rest were Germans. It was a nice group of people except for the English, they mostly kept to themselves.
Anyway we set sail with the perfect conditions for sailing, the sun was shining and there was a good strong wind.
We sailed to Blue (or maybe Plee) Pearl Harbour were we did some snorkeling. This was my first time to view the Great Barrier Reef and it did not disappoint. It was beautiful, with all the different colours of coral and tropical fish. Some of the coral even looked like a human brain, and later I was to find out that it is actually called 'brain coral'. You are not allowed to touch or stand on the coral, since if you break it, it only grows at 1.5cm a year. But all the time when you are snorkeling you want to touch it. I wanted to stay in the water but it got a little bit cold since it was about 5 in the evening.
We then sailed to some secluded bay where we were sleeping (on the boat of course) so we dropped anchor. Another boat called the Broomstick came sailing in and told us that they had lost there anchor :-) and so we had to tie the two boats together to stop them from sailing away in the middle of the night.
The people on the other boat recognised me and I recognised them, they were from the tour bus that had picked me up from Town of 1770 because of the over booking and brought me to Kroombit cattle station. It was a nice surprise. We later had chicken for dinner , o yea all food was provided and cooked by the staff on board. I mostly talked to the Irish couple from Bray Co. Wicklow, one of the Swedish guys and one or two of the Germans. It was good feeling to be on a boat in the ocean having a few beers and talking to people who you don't know and who don't know you. Nice!
