Setting off from Wendover towards Salt Lake City we could see that the Bonneville Salt Flats were on our left some distance from the road. Expecting to have a considerable detour before our journey south to Monument Valley we set off early.

With world land speed records attempted there we thought it would have to be at least half an hour away as the track would have to be several miles long. Plus the sat nav couldn't pin point it, so we turned down the road signposted towards it and headed into the horizon along an empty road with water either side of it.

We've driven along roads that appear to vanish at the horizon, and we've seen roads that drop over the crest of a hill into the unknown. In the desert we've seen the mirage of water on the road ahead in the heat of the day, and with all of that in mind, Mark and I gradually leaned over the dashboard trying to work out what was happening to the road ahead as we rapidly approached. A few hundred yards away we agreed - the road was heading straight into a lake.
