Time to bid farewell to Lisbon and all the people I met here. It's a bit of a downer, because a) of course, it means my holiday is over, but also b) the summer holiday is coming to an end. Damn! It’s back to work next week.

I was never sure if I would like Lisbon, but I have to admit, I’ve had a really good time here. It’s a very laid back city, with very little crime and seemingly total integration. Not to overstate a point, if not for the hills, it could be one of my favourite cities. If a younger, leaner, fitter version of myself had come here, it could have even been a place to live, at least for a while. However, that is not the case, so I’m more than happy to return to my life in Barcelona.

As I sit at the airport, once again I’m struck by an oddity. I hate to harp on about something I’ve already mentioned, but the airport scares me. It’s been a recurring theme on my mind the whole time I’ve been here. At Costa da Caparica, the airplanes seemed to be coming in very low, the fact that I could see the passengers looking out of the window without the aid of my glasses was a little disturbing. In Praça do Comércio, it was disconcerting to watch airplanes disappear behind buildings in the square. At Castelo de S. Jorge, I found it perturbing to watch airplanes fly into tower blocks (an optical illusion, I know, but worrying, nevertheless).

Yes, the airport really is in the city. As you stand outside the terminal, you don’t see a car park or a motorway, you see houses. These houses are right under the flight path. This causes me to wonder two things, 1) what are the property prices like? and 2) surely somebody must realise how dangerous this is, mustn’t they? Ah well, what do I know?

As long as I get out of the airport safely, I’ll be happy. So, now it’s time to say "Adeus, Lisboa and thanks for the memories."
