Flag of United Kingdom  , England,
Wednesday, August 1, 2012

Arriving in Forest Hill, I was struck by the distinct lack of Olympic atmosphere there was on show. Nothing had changed. What was I expecting? Flags? Posters? Bunting? Well, actually, yes. Was I greeted with any of these. Well, no. There had been lots of adverts at the airport for the Olympics, but now I was in the real London; on my walk home from the station all I saw was one solitary flag flying from a car... and it was a Jamaican one at that.

Getting home, I found my mum watching sports entertainment (better known as wrestling) on the television, so nothing had changed there either. It wasn't until I spoke to my brother and heard his obvious enthusiasm for the Games that I started to get a feeling for the Games. The best indicator of how big the Games had become (outside Forest Hill) was that the BBC had created specific Olympic television channels. Not only did they have Olympic coverage on BBC 1 – 4, but they had created 24 Olympic channels. Rather than be dragged from event to event, basically showing the highlights (usually involving Team GB), you could settle down and watch an entire match/event from start to finish. 24 channels of sport. Welcome to the Games.
