After the arduous, though excellent, trip of the day before to Fraser Island, the intention was to spend the day at the beach in Hervey Bay, taking yet another rare opportunity to swim in the sea. However, the weather put paid to that. It rained all day and, as soon became apparent, though truth be told, it was no great surprise, that there really was nothing to do in Hervey Bay. The only reason why people came here was to visit Fraser Island. For that reason I felt sorry for the people who had gone there today. It couldn't have been much fun.

As far as I was concerned, the day was a complete wash out. I couldn’t leave the hostel because of the rain. The highlight of the day was spotting something large flying in the air at dusk. At first I thought, that’s an unusually large bird, with a strange way of flying. The more I looked at it, the more I realised that its manner of flying wasn’t the only odd thing about it. The next thing I noticed was that the wings were misshapen; they looked almost like... bat wings. Almost? They were bat wings! These were the largest bats I’d ever seen. At first there were only one or two of them circling the hostel, but then a whole 'flock’ of them went by – I suddenly understood the scene in Batman (the Christopher Nolan movie) when Bruce Wayne is terrified when surrounded by bats. These were monsters. As it was dark I couldn’t see them properly, but I’d been since reliably informed that these were, in fact, flying foxes. No, they are not foxes that fly; they are bats, but they are so big that some bright spark thought they were actually foxes.
