The trip to Rottnest, or to be more precise, the ride on the
Megablast back from Rottnest, left us all feeling rather exhausted, but not to
fear, being a Sunday, it was to be a fairly tranquil day, particularly as I was
leaving that evening.

So what was on the cards? Well, we couldn’t have a Sunday
without seeing what a typical Sunday lunch was like. Therefore, armed with
sausages, onions, buns, sauces and beers packed into the esky (how many times do I have to tell you? It’s
an icebox!
) we went to Whiteman Park to participate in the great Aussie
tradition; the Aussie Barbie.

The park was full of families, all with their own eskys,
blankets and chairs all prepared for lunch. The park had public BBQs positioned
all over the park, so there was always one free. All we had to do was rock up
to one, turn it on and Bob’s your uncle. Maybe it was just the atmosphere of
being in the park, surrounded by so many like-minded people, but lunch was
excellent. Although, there was one curious trait about the preparation of the
food; I don’t recall seeing one woman at the BBQs. Clearly, the BBQ is seen as
the male preserve, even though, it’s the women who do the shopping for the
food, prepare it and pack it.

The afternoon was spent chilling in the park, first spotting
kangaroos (after waiting so long to see one, now they’re everywhere), then just
watching the world go by as Lilli and her cousins went off to the water park to
play. A very chilled afternoon, indeed.

But soon enough, it was time to go and, sadly, I had to take
my leave of Helen, Paul and Lilli (not forgetting Evie – beergle extraordinaire
– and Alfred, their dogs, who did their best to make me feel part of the
family) and continue my journey. It had been a fun two weeks in Perth,
especially catching up with Helen and meeting her family. My heartfelt
gratitude goes out to them for putting up with me for two weeks. However, as
has been commented on before, all things come to an end and it was time to
board my plane for... Cairns.

The BBs, the Beagles and the elusive cat all officially miss the Bigfella. They are all grateful that they got to be part of his Walkabout. Enjoy the rest of your travels and be assured that you are welcome back anytime. x
