What I did
It’s both interesting and disappointing at the same time. It’s interesting to see how 'stalls’ are set up on the canals and how the ‘stallholders’ grab passing boats to force the passengers to view their goods. However, the disappointment lies in that once you’ve been there for five minutes, there’s not a lot else to do.
Although it is an actual market where locals go first thing in the morning to do their daily shopping, by about 9:00 – 9:30, it becomes a tourist trap for a captive audience as all the tourists go on organised trips. The trip included a quick look around the market in a long-tailed speedboat and then, for an extra sum, a tour in a paddle boat. I felt a little bit cheated by this as we were promised to be taken to parts of the market which couldn’t be reached on foot, however, the reality was that we were ferried up and down the high street (or high canal, if you will) a couple of times and that was it.
Nevertheless, as a one-time experience, it is worth going.
