So I've just had my first experience of Khao San Road, which is to backpackers what Las Ramblas is to tourists. Personally, I have to say, I found it a little disappointing. I’m not sure what I expected, but it seemed a little deserted to me. Then again, as I was told, the rain didn’t help.

Walking through Khao San Road put me in mind of Bladerunner. Not the hi-tech buildings, but the underclass at street level with lots of neon lights and food stalls everywhere. It seems that anything a backpacker might want can be found there, including made-to-measure suits (!).

On my way to the Khao San Road, I made the mistake of getting stopped by a tailor outside his shop. It was kind of funny as he was giving me his spiel, even though I stated quite categorically that there was no way I was going to buy a suit from him or anyone else for that matter. Yet, he insisted and insisted and I have to say that he was very good at it. I left him with a vague promise that I’d come back another day and have a look.

So, Khao San Road wasn’t particularly full, which allowed me to take stock of what it was – it breaks down like this: guest houses, travel agents, souvenir shops, foot massages, food stalls/restaurants, McDonalds, KFC, Burger King and Subway (why????). I had a delicious meal (not at the fast food chains!) – Thai curry soup to start; Green Curry with Chicken and rice and 2 bottles of Chang (which are about 3-4 pints), all for the princely sum of €13. I can’t complain too much about that.

After chilling out in Khao San for a bit and taking in what atmosphere there was, I headed back to the hostel, when I ran into my tailor again. This time he’d changed his job hat and started offering me prostitutes! That was when, without a trace of irony, he came out with: "There are three things you have to get/try in Thailand, my friend – a suit, sex and food." At least he’d got his priorities right.
