It was time to leave Australia behind. It was strange to think that, after a five month break, I would be back at work in less than a week. I was actually looking forward to it, I definitely needed some structure back in my life. Before that, however, there was still the final leg of the trip to complete: New Zealand.

I'd been to see Alan in Melbourne and now it was time to drop in on Craig in Auckland. There was one small problem. I’d been trying to get hold of him and couldn’t. I was starting to panic, but at the last minute I managed to get through to him. My heart sank though when he told me he’d got the dates wrong and was in fact away until the third of January. He said he’d sort something out, but he never got back to me. So I arrived at Auckland airport without a plan.

After some time, trying to get my bearings, I decided to get a night in a hostel in Auckland and see what the next day would bring. As it was for one night only, I booked a bed in a six-bed dorm in a hostel in the CBD. After three and a half months of travelling, this was without a shadow of a doubt the worst hostel I’d stayed in. Maybe the hostel wasn’t so bad, but the room I ended up in, was atrocious. There was no space to walk in the room as there was food and clothes all over the floor. It was a real tip. To add insult to injury, I was forced to sleep in a top bunk (really????). This 'Big Fella’ was not made for clambering in and out of a top bunk.

I was not happy about where I was staying, so I dropped my things in the room and went back out to have a look at Auckland. It has to be said, Auckland is decidedly average. Having had a look around the CBD, there really is nothing much to recommend it. Fortunately, having come into some money, I was able to go to a pub and get wasted and forget about my troubles. I was sure everything would be sorted out and I’d see Craig the next day...
