Lunch and then back to the main river for a second motorboat ride from hell courtesy of Lewis Hamilton at the wheel
Back in Bandar, we tried to fit in a trip to see the proboscis monkeys in the mangroves. Our mini-bus driver knew a friend who could help us out. (Strange how tourism people know someone who can ........). A swift deal was struck to hire a water-taxi to give us a tour of the main river sights, the water village and the mangroves+proboscis monkeys and we're off again on a white-knuckle ride across the river. Sights of the royal palace were from some distance, but the Omar Ali Safuddien mosque, complete with gold-plated dome, was pretty impressive, especially with a foreground of stilt-house accommodation much preferred by the locals. Up the river into the mangroves and our first sighting a couple of proboscis monkeys, seen only in Borneo. Strange creatures with a drooping red nose. They are shy and can be difficult to find. Our driver has been on this trip three times already today and knows where to look. He finds a larger group further up the mangroves and also a monitor lizard snoozing on a branch.
White-knuckle time again as we do a James Bond boat tour of the water village, a maze of stilted house littering the water front opposite the main corniche of Bandar. A great way to round off the day.
Finally it's back into the car for the 90 mins journey back down the only highway in Brunei to Kuala Belait.
