Wong & Gem's European Vacation - Diary Update 11
More of Germany...

Day 188 - Monday 4th September - 2006 Dresden - Germany
Something must be wrong we woke up at 7.30 and were off by 8.30... we drove to Dresden and spent the day checking out a few more sites and Wayne managed to get his eye checked again by the same doctor which was great. We spent the night in Dresden at the same spot we stayed last time and were both exhausted by 9.00pm ... must still be jetlag or the fact that we woke up before 10am. A night of Gem coughing up another lung... yeh what fun.

Day 189 - Tuesday 5th September - 2006 Leipzig to Naumberg
Oh my God we woke up at 7.30am again and were off and driving by 8.30.... what is wrong with us!!! Back to the fantastic autobahns (we really do love them) and into Leipzig where we found a secure parking spot right within the city and a very jolly parking attendant who could not speak a word of English but was very excited that we were from Australia. We found the tourist info and got the run down on what to see and spent the next 4 hours walking around the old town which was very pretty. Wayne got some great fresh ingredients (again only by ordering in German... very impressive) to whip up a Spicy Pork Thai Salad (inspired by one he tried in Bangkok but not quite as blow your head off spicy!!). We jumped on the internet and were very shocked and saddened to read that Steve Irwin the Crocodile hunter had died... it made us a bit depressed for the rest of the day as since we have been in Europe we have realized what a legend he is because as soon as you say your from Australia all the Europeans want to talk about The Crocodile Hunter!! Next it was off to Naumberg, where we got on our bikes and explored yet another gorgeous half timbered house little German town. We then headed in the direction of Bamberg but only managed to get halfway to Saalfeld before it got dark (our driving lights aren't working so we had to stop) and before we were exhausted. We found a motor home parking spot and parked with a heap of Germans for the night... a couple were very excited to see that we were from Australia but could only speak limited English so kept talking to us in full blown German... but we must be getting better as we managed to understand about half of what they said!!

Day 190- Wednesday 6th September - 2006 Bamburg to Nuremburg
We set off about lunch time today after a great breakfast and after Gem coughed up half a lung again!! Yuk. We drove through more gorgeous little German towns with pretty houses and into Coburg... which has two very impressive castles. Then onto Bamburg which is described by lonely planet as "practically a byword for magnificence and an untouched monument to the Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich II" and guess what it was!! Wayne was feeling too tired to go exploring so despite feeling very sick Gem took off and did her own tour of this gorgeous town (Wayne was a little sorry he did not go when I got back 2 hours later and raved about it). Bamburg is famous for its Romanesque and Gothic cathedral which was very beautiful and impressive. However, the winding narrow streets were even more impressive with gorgeous buildings and lovely shops. The town is divided by the Regnitz River which flows very fast through the centre and the beautiful painted Altes Rathaus (old town hall) was actually sitting in the middle of the bridge that spans the river... very cute. Next we drove to Nuremburg and found our motor home spot for the night, next to a beautiful park full of gorgeous lakes. We spent the afternoon riding around on our bikes exploring the park lands and also came across the Nuremburg Volksfest which is sort of a mini version of the Brisbane Ekka. We also saw the massive stadium which recently held some of the Fifa World Cup games. Tonight we met the guy in the very clean Hymer next to us (he spent about 2 hours polishing it and made ours look very feral in comparison) ... a crazy old German guy who lives in his motor home and just travels around everywhere... he has even taken it to Africa.

Day 191- Thursday 7th September - 2006 - Nurnburg to Wurzburg
This morning was spent exploring the town of Nurnburg which again was another gorgeous German town. Unfortunately, they are all starting to look alike!!. This afternoon we found our way to the next town of Wurzburg where we were going to meet up with Hieke and Achim. Wurzburg is full of tiny one way streets so it was interesting trying to get around in Misty and we ended up going down a few one way streets the wrong way... we think the giant Australia sign gives it away that we had no idea where we were so we did not get abused !!. We found Heike's house and caught up with her, Adriann (the baby) and Penny (the dog) and then went for a big walk through through the hills covered in Wine Yards to see a great view of the city. Tonight we had a great dinner out and then Wayne and I tried to find the local Motor Home spot, but because I had broken the external attenna for NavMan we had to rely on the normal one and we kept loosing the satellite... hence we kept getting lost. We ended up giving up on finding the parking for motorhomes and got a parking spot 2 meters from where we had orinally left 30 minutes earlier !!

Day 192- Friday 8th September - 2006 Wurzburg to Butzbach
Today we explored Wurzburg with Heike and Adriann...poor Achim had to go to work. We walked through the streets and went through the magnificent Residenz which is a massive baroque building which was the residence of Neumann and also had the most amazing gardens which we explored. Then off through the main streets, over the gorgeous 15th century bridge called the ALte Mainbruke and up to the massive Marienberg fortress. Then back into town for a late lunch at one of the fantastic market square restaurants. We said our goodbyes and then headed towards Butzbach which is about 40km above Frankfurt. We had to navigate ourselves which again was a bit scary but we managed to get there. Why are we in Butzbach ???? well it turns out we have family here that we did not really even know about... Wayne's brother's wife, Kerry has a brother that lives here called Richard and he has a German born wife called Natalie and two children, called Ellery and Robyn and two cats and two bunnies !!. They had invited us to come and visit them as they heard that we were traveling around. As we entered their street Richard was out the front jumping up and down waving to us... and we had a big warm welcome from them all. Tonight we got treated like kings and had a fantastic hearty German meal and then stayed up to the wee hours chatting and getting to know one another.

Day 193- Saturday 9th September - 2006 - Butzbach
Well this morning we got treated like kings again to a wonderful German breakfast and then we took off into town to try and find a mechanic that could fix our driving lights. We eventually found out that there is a fiat dealer (the motor in the motor home is a Fiat) in town so we were glad to find out that they would squeeze us in on Monday morning. It was great to have someone translate for us and not have to rely upon sign language !! Tonight we went out to dinner at one of the traditional Bavarian local pubs and enjoyed some more hearty German food. There is also a dense forest behind where Richard and Natalie live and we all went for a walk through the forest... it's great to know that there are no snakes that can kill you... unlike home.

Day 194- Sunday 10th September - 2006 - Butzbach
A lazy day today which started with another great German breakfast and then us entertaining ourselves playing children's games ... the best one was called Loopin Loui. This afternoon we all went for a walk to some of the local fields to pick apples and pears from the trees. Another great meal followed by too much red wine and playing board games.

Day 195- Monday 11th September - 2006 - Butzbach
We had to get up at the crack of dawn today (oh O.K it was only 6.45 but when you have a splitting headache from too much red it seems early) so that we could get the motor home in to the mechanics. Poor Richard had to go to work with a hangover. Yeh, they fixed the lights and we can now drive at night now if we need to!! Then off to give Misty a much needed bath... but the bugs were so ingrained that I had to give the front of the car a cut and polish in order to get all the dead splattered bugs off ! Wayne is going to cook some masterpiece tonight so then we hit the shops.
