I've arrived!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Entry 7 of 19 | show all | print this entry |
The flight was very long, sitting in the same place for 12 hours is definitly not cool!! Also due to being grossed out by aeroplane toilets and the paranoia of being sucked out of the plane after it has been flushed prevented me from going to the loo for 10 hour, which is a success in itself! In general the flight was good, on arrival at our seats we were greated with leather cushions, blanket, pillow and headphones which later were used to watch the thoroughly boring in flight film "how to loose a guy in 10days". the food ws up to its usual standars of vomit provoking muck resulting in us all eating practicaly nothing but bread and drinking plenty of water.
Once finally arriving in HK we collected our luggage with no problems and went merrily on our way to McDonalds where we were supposed to be meeting Ronald the OB driver. After waiting 45mins and attacking a few lone men on the off chance they may be Ronald (which they weren't) we began to think it was all a big joke, after all Ronald McDonald!! ....can't be taken seriously can it? we decided to walk back and see if he was waiting by arrivals as the plane had landed a bit late. we were eventually unit ed with a fellow PT volunteer going to south China by him shouting at Louisa. Here we met Moya our rep, Matt who is in charge of us in OB and Dave one of last years volunteers although not from PT. we were then chauffeur driven (by matt) to our flat which is on campus, which we thought was absolutly fantastic as it meant we would get maximum sleep. Later we discovered that practically all the staff live in accomodation on campus. We left to unpack and then introduced to people at dinner.
Thursday morning we were introduced to yet more people, I fear i have forgotten nearly all their names already. we were then given everything that last years volunteers left us, this includes a fair bit of stuff: tv, dvd, computer with internet, phone, christmas decorations and some food. after a vague attempt to set it all up, but failing miserably we left it and went into Choi Hung to get octopus cards, which are truely magic! all you do is stick some money on it then you use it to pay for all forms of public transport wich saves trying to find a silly amount of cash....that reminds me buses and metro are soo incredibly cheap abou $4.5 about 45p! into town.
This morning started at 6am!! we joined the DP(duty person) getting to know what sort of things we will have to do. Basically involved oopening gates, raising the flag, checking the water for sharks (none have been sighted for the past 3years)and setting up/ clearing away meals. Talking of food it is very different. Lunch and dinner include rice, veg and some sort of meat. Breakfast is the strangest it includes boiled chinese bread (sweet bread) sometimes stuffed with something eg chicken. meat balls: pork, beef or fish.
Anyway back to today. After lunch we wento to Wan Chai to make appointments to get ID cards.Took about 2 hours, 2 buses and 3 changes on the metro. Only to find out that you can't make appointments there and that you have to do it over the phone!! we were NOT amused. So on the way back we stopped in Mong Kok for a bit of retail therapy. Back at home Ken came round (his office is next to our flat) to connect up all our electrical equipment and now we have working internet!! and phone YAY!!!!! now im off to watch a dvd and go to bed.
Oh, forgot to say about the sea its soooooooooooooo warm and calm with tons of ickle fishies swimming around, lovely for swimming.
