Hi Everyone,

Sorry it has been awhile since my last entry! I started work last week and it has been great so far! The children are so welcoming and even though I do not speak the language very well all they want to do is involve me in what they are doing! I just think it is amazing that these children have nothing but they are so thoughtful.

Last week I worked at a different project with younger boys because Pro Ninos currently have too many volunteers. The children were aged between 5 - 15 years and many are street children or have come from abusive families. They stay at center for 6 - 12 months and the aim is to reintegrate them back with their families with help from a social worker and a psychologist. If they are unable to go back home then they move into temporary accommodation like another care home. The center is very basic and there are not many resources. Emma and I made a card game for them so we can now play snap. I played it with one boy 5 times in one morning and he did not get bored, surprisingly!

The center are welcome to have new ideas and they are keen for volunteers to get involved so that they can improve things. A great challenge for me! I am not sure how often I can go there though as this week I am working at Pro Ninos.

I have been working at Pro Ninos with boys aged between 15  - 20 years. Today I have been in the day center. In the morning educator's bring the boys to the center. They then have a shower and wash their clothes. As a volunteer you have different duties. Today I was deodorant duty which means I spray the boys when they come out of the shower to make them smell nice! As it was my first day they were testing me by trying to get the deodorant off me but me being a meanie did not give in!

When the boys are clean we have breakfast, I had to eat meat this morning as that it all there was and I was so hungry so now I have a dodgy stomach! I shall opt for just beans and cake next time! We then took the boys to the park and did a treasure hunt. Our team lost and only found 5 bags of sweets! I gave one to the over team by a mistake, opps! Again the boys were so thoughtful and were willing to share their sweets.

I am now in the college e-mailing and it has been agreed that I can have extra Spanish lessons up until Christmas. The Spanish is improving slowly and I am getting used to not having a clue what us going on and to just follow everyone else! ha!! not something I am used to right??

Anyway must go, thank you all for your e mails, I am thinking and missing you all. I will reply to your emails when I can.

Hello
Hi Gemma,
Sounds to me as though you are now in the swing of things, the children sound very accomodating (don't tell Anna !) mind you she will probably read it anyway, I am sure you have as much to offer them as they have to you.
I can't believe you ate meat, bet you won't do that again, anyway you take care of yourself and hope it's everything you thought it would be, enjoy the experience

I have really enjoyed reading your blog! Brings back memories of my travels...being somewhere where you don't have a clue what people are saying! Amazing how you much more about body language you learn.
Have fun Gemma and enjoy every minute. What you are doing is really something amazing.

I envy you!
Hi Gemma

I have just read all your blogg entries. You make it all sound so alive and fun. I wish I had been brave/confident enough to do something like that when I was young. I really admire your courage and sense of adventure and am looking forward to reading the next instalment.

Have fun and make the most of it

Love
