Hi everyone,
Thanks so much for all your comments! it is really nice to hear from everyone because I miss you all!
I am still staying with the nuns although it is not as exciting as I thought it was going to be. In the convent there is a youth hostel and that is the part we are staying in so we don't really see them very often. Emma and I are sharing a room and there is a kitchen downstairs where we can cook although we have not used it yet as we don't have any cooking equipment. We should be moving into our flat next month and I am looking forward to that as we will have much more space.
Our first language course was on monday and I was totally overwelmed!! I would not call it a class for beginners and everyone else seem to have the basics whereas Emma and I know nothing! So yeah it is really hard to follow and me and Emma left the class yesterday on a total downer as we had no idea. Sarah (a volunteer from America( taught us a few things after the lesson yesterday because she could see we were both struggling. That was great and thanks to her we now understand it, yeah!! We have done our homework so lets hope we get full marks tomorrow! ha, it is like being back at school!
The language lessons we have are in the same place as where I will be working. We had a brief talk from our supervisor about the project and it sounds fab! There are 3 different parts to the project. The first is street work which involves finding children on the streets and bringing them to the project. The second stage is in a the day centre. This involves doing activities with the children once they have been brought to the centre and the third stage is intergrating them back into society either finding accomodation for them or work with them into returning home. It sounds so exciting, I can wait to start!
I have langauge courses for the rest of this week and next week. They run from 11 / 2pm so we get the afternoon off to do homework, sightseeing etc. There 8 other volunteers who are working in Mexico City so we meet up often for lunch, drinks...
I am really glad I came to Mexico and it feels so safe here! well obviously you have to be careful and use your common sense! and everyone is so friendly! We have been using the Metro alot and that again is fine, not as bad as people make it out to be. It costs 5p per journey and is very reliable.
I am really struggling with the food and have had a bad stomach for days! Emma and I went to a burger king yesterday and it was so nice to have english food!! The Mexicans eat alot of tacos, beans and salsa. They also dont understand the concept of vegetarian but I managing ok as I eat chicken. At the camp I was offered fried worms, yuk!!! I nearly took some!
