After spending most of the day in San Fran, we picked up our car from the car park it had been stored in for the past 3 days.  The guy in charge seemed far too relax for the job and first gave us the wrong set of car keys, which was a bit concerning.  Eventually, we hit highway 1 going south towards LA. We drove past a few beaches and along a couple of cliffs where we just caught sight of the sunset as we drove to Monterey to spend the night. The nearer we got to Monterey, the more the traffic built up, but luckily for us going in the opposite direction. Doog had to drive with squinty eyes as the stream of headlights shone in our faces as the cars went past. It turned out that this was the last day of the US Open at Pebble Beach, which we had to drive right past.

When we reached our motel, I jumped out of the car to check us in. Although it was quite late, at 9.30pm, I thought that someone would still be at the reception. The guy who came to the door however when I rang the bell seemed very reluctant to actually open it and let me into the office. Instead he pushed the form I had to fill in through the letter box along with a pen. I then had to poke the money through before getting a key to bour room. The room was really nice though!

Once again we needed to find somewhere to eat and as it was late, we were slightly concerned whether or not this would be possible based on our past experiences in the US. Our motel was opposite a large shopping mall, which had lots of restaurants and a supermarket but after driving around it we found everything was closed. We drove through the town and once again Denny’s came to our rescue.
