Hola amigos,
I am EXHAUSTED! Last night I went out with some of those locals that I met in the pub the other day. These people stay out late - I mean, really late. They stay up and smoke cigarette after cigarette after cigarette! The cool thing to do here is to go to speakeasy type places...so you show up and it looks like you´re going to someone´s apartment or something. It´s just a regular door on a regular street. No signs of anything going on inside. Then you´re buzzed in, go up a steep flight of stairs, turn a corner and all of a sudden you´re in the coolest bar ever. (SF people: Bourbon and Branch could learn a thing or two from these places!).
It was funny because there was this group of Columbians next to us and the people I was with thought their accents were so weird. I, of course, could not hear the slightest distinction in the way they spoke. But that brings me to the topic of this language...The Spanish here is different than the Spanish I´ve heard back home. For instance, instead of saying ¨vaminos¨ they say bamos- really quickly. Words are kind of shortened and blended. So I´ll say a basic word that I figure anyone should know and they wont understand me. Of course I´m sure I simply butcher any dialect of the language.....
So, I have all of my clothes airing out on my balcony right now. It´s like, you take a shower and you still smell like smoke!
I´ll tell you though...these people are so friendly and warm. The greet each other with hugs and kisses and just seem really nice to one another. I´m sure they´re just like anyone else and have their own issues, but it´s just the first impression vibe I get. Oh, and speaking of issues....psychotherapy is super popular here- everybody goes and they have signs for mental health places everywhere. But apparently it´s still kind of embarassing for the guys to admit it.
OK, I´m going to take my vampire butt out into this nice day to walk around a bit.
Adios muchachos!
M
