So we left San Francsico and got on a 7 hour bus journey to Arcata to visit the Redwood National Park in Humboldt County. It didn't start well when we couldn't fit on the bus as they had over booked it so us and about 5 other people had to wait for another one, the plus side was we got the whole bus to ourselves! Although we didn't arrive in Arcata until 11pm then had to try and get a taxi to our motel! We eventually got there and wnet to bed slightly worried that we hadn't actually arranged how we were going to get to the Redwood National Park which was about 60 miles from where we were staying and there was no public transport to get us any closer.
Luckily we had a telephone number for Ray! What a legend! We rang him at 8 in the morning and although he had had things planned for the day by 11 he was in the motel car park wiht his A-Team van ready to take us off sightseeing! He was hilarious, his glasses were like the bottom of milk bottles and he was the craziest driver ever! But he was lovely and sooo enthusiastic! There wasn't any question that he didn't know the answer to. The whole tour lasted 6 hours and included a picnic prepared by Ray which included all local produce from his secret suppliers, its was yummy! We saw some amazing trees, including one that was over 300ft tall and 21feet in diameter! It even made Sam feel short!
We were pretty sad to say bye to Ray but we'll never forget him and his amazing ancient forest!
