After arranging a backpacker style tour on Fraser Island, which is the biggest sand island in the world and has more sand than the Sahara desert, we needed to get to Hervey Bay which is the closest town on the mainland. The owner of the hostel picked us up from the greyhound coach station and gave us a guided tour of the town, which didn't take long as it's like a retirement location. Practically all the tourists there are there for one reason, to do a tour of Fraser Island. The hostel was included in the price of the trip and suprisingly was the best one we've stayed in in Australia.
We got to meet the rest of our group that we'd be spending the next 3 days with on the island. There were a group of 5 girls from Ireland and 2 other groups of 2 girls from England, Sam was the token male! We had a briefing with the owner of the company, Troy, who talked us through the best locations and what route they recommended we take to ensure we got to see as much a possible. We all had to put money into a kitty for a food shop as there are hardly any facilities on the island. Luckily the Irish girls nominated themselves to take charge of the food shopping!
