The drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound was another amazing route, it was pretty cloudy that day but the mountains that surrounded us on all sides stood really impressive with their snow capped peaks just appearing through the top of the clouds. The whole of Milford Sound is Department of Conservation land so for the last hour and a half of the drive there isn't a single building. To get thee we had to go through a tunnel which is over a 1.2 Kilometres long and goes through the middle of a mountain!! It's almost pitch black and on a gradient so you feel like you're on a theme park ride as you drive through. Coming out the other side we we emerged within a canyon and then had to drive down the steepest winding roads to get to the hostel. The place we were staying is the only accomodation in the whole of Milford Sound. There are lots of natural phenomena with chasms and huge isolated lakes within the mountains but the main reason we went to the area was to get onto the fiord.
To get onto the water we went on a 2hr boat cruise which took us through the fiord and out onto the Tasman sea. The weather was so amazing compared to the day before and as we sailed through the corridor of mountain ridges it was spectacular! As it was a small boat it took us right to the edge of the rocks so we could get close to some sleepy seals (which we learnt are actually sea lions but everyone calls them seals) and even right under a waterfall that was 50 storeys high! Luckily they provided some cool looking red raincoats which was a good job because when it hits its with an amazing force! The whole place really was stunning and we both agreed the most beautiful place in New Zealand. Check out the photos and see what you think?
