The coastal drive down to Kaikoura was stunning, following weather beaten beaches, old railway tracks crossing rickety wooden bridges. We decided to get there early as we wanted to take a walk along the peninsular where a seal colony often comes inland. We took our packed lunch (cheese and tomato sandwich for Sam, Philadelphia and tomato sandwich for Gem and an apple each. The same bloody lunch we have had for a month!) and started out on the nice easy stroll along the esplanade thinking "this 3 and a half hour walk will be easy!". After stopping for lunch (about 20mins into the walk!) we made it to the seal colony which was actually only 2 seals sunbathing on the rocks. It was worth it though as they were good characters constantly rolling around and stretching to get the right sunbathing position. The walk suddenly turned into a hike as we had to go up a cliff, down hills, through woodland and across fields in the baking heat and didn't get back until about 5 hours later! But as you can see from the photos, it was well worth the effort!
