Thurs 14th Feb
After taking a wrong turn leaving Waitomo (Gem's fault!) we stumbled across a big-ass waterfall (which made the detour worthwhile!). Then we eventually made it to Rotorua and were greeted by the notorious eggy aroma that we think smells more like egg flavoured popcorn! Our hotel is really plush, especially because we got champagne and chocolates and will be getting them again tomorrow, plus breakfast in bed and free spa facilities!! (thanks Ann/Mum - you're a legend!!)
We've had a bit of an explore of Rotorua and are going to go out for a Valentines meal tonight as a treat.
Fri 15th Feb - Sam's Birthday!
We woke up to the best breakfast in bed - literally everything you could think of, it took two porters to bring it all in
Sat 16th Feb
Sadly we had to check out of the lovely hotel and back to the reality of being travellers! :-( We stopped off on the way to Taupo at Whakarewarewa State Forest Park which had some pretty impressive Redwood Groves and after a really steep climb through tropical forests a great view back down onto Rotorua.

! After that we went for a relaxing spa in boiling hot bubbling water then had a leisurely swim in a pool, all to ourselves! Then we headed into town for some classy kebabs (honestly they were!) and had an explore around Rotorua. We went back to the hotel for yet more free champagne and chocolates and toasted Sam's birthday in style. Then we hit the town ready to do some celebrating. Our first stop was Fat Dog's where we had the tastiest dinner in the quirky surroundings (check out the size of Sam's veggie burger!). We then stumbled across the Pheasant Plucker, a bar with a bunch of misfit live musicians who were actually pretty good! We loved the funny little bongo man! After that it was more bars and Rotorua has plenty of them!Sat 16th Feb
