Tues 12th Feb/Wed 13th Feb

We swung by Hamilton on our way out of Raglan to have a look around, we got Katie a real classy birthday card (ooooh the suspense!) and some little treats for Sams Birthday. We also found the best cheesecake shop which went down very well! :-)

Then it was off to Waitomo, cave country, where we had booked to stay at a hostel which turned out to be more like a ranch, it was brilliant!! This time we had 2 pet pigs, a deer, a goat and a horse! Very random! Waitomo is a really strange village that is all situated along one road where everyone is offereing trips into the caves. The big deal round there is the glow-worms that live in the caves.

We went on a tour that was about half an hour away but they took 12 of us in a mini-bus. We were the only ones under 60, apart from the guide who was really funny and took the piss outta the oldies! In the first cave we had to wear helmets with head torches and squeeze through some pretty small spaces (Ann, not one for u!). But it was totally worth it because eventually you get into a boat that takes you down the stream that runs through the middle of the cave. The whole ceiling is illuminated with glow worms, it was amazing! It would have been really romantic but it turns out the glow worms are actually maggots and the thing that glows is their poo! The next cave we went to was a bit more dramatic in it's structure and we could walk through as there was no water in this one.

In the afternoon we went on a scenic walk along Ruakuri which, part of the time seemed like we were in a pre-historic jungle! No dinosaurs though! But we did take some great photos (about 200 which we had to thin out!).

p.s If you are wondering what the pictures that look like we're flying are, there was a trampoline at the ranch!
