Huanuco's tourism slogan is "the best climate in the world", which wasn't the reason why we went there (it just happened to be on our route) but we would've been happy for a bit of sun after our time at higher altitude. Huanuco sits at 2000m, so you can expect warm weather and it can be hot when the sun is out. Around 3000m is when you have the colder evenings and there can be more of a chill in the air. However, we arrived into the city in the rain, it rained on our rest day as we went for breakfast, when we walked to the market for our supplies, when we went for dinner, and only cleared up briefly as we left town the following day
It wasn't a big problem and we would always rather that it rained on a rest day when you can hide in the hotel or in a restaurant anyway. It just seemed comical because we saw signs up describing their "perfect climate".
The city seemed strange and unfamiliar to me, and didn't make me instantly like it in the way that other cities have charmed me. Firstly, the traffic was really busy and everyone was rushing through the streets. Also most of the pavements were unfinished, with huge pits or man-hole covers missing, which meant you had to walk with your head down at all times. There were also a lot of beggars and people sleeping on the street, which we have hardly seen at all on the trip. Conversely there were at least about a dozen casinos, with bright, flashing lights and glitzy looking hotels, with chandeliers in the porch, around the main square. There were also far more big, flashy electronics stores, home style bars with drunk locals flashing their cash and tons of American Diner style fast food joints. It had a strange feel of Las Vegas on one hand (with lots of casinos and hotels being called Las Vegas) but also seemed less cared for or maintained on the other hand. It didn't sit well with me and I didn't really like it.
Anyway, it did the job that we needed it to do. We spent a lot of time at the hotel reading, writing my journal, and generally resting. We also had the opportunity to eat lots of food, so that made us fairly happy and we feel rested up enough to head off tomorrow.
