We could see huge hill climbs around us in all directions during our break and thought it would be about a two hour long slog up to get over the hills again. However, when we approached the bottom of the hill climb we were relieved to see that the road actually followed a valley between the hills, which we couldn’t see before
As we arrived at the bottom of the hill, we had about 12km left to get to Medellin and it was only 11am. We could tell that our legs were getting tired and we needed some rest after our 5 days of continual cycling, because we made hard work of the small hills on the approach into town. It felt like we were cycling through treacle. The other problem was the traffic once we go into town. The roads were really busy with fast flowing traffic, and I would’ve happily swapped it all for a huge hill climb rather than battle against the cars. I guess it was just the same as if we had cycled into any city in the western world; everyone was on a time schedule and had no room on the road to spare for us. Thankfully we found the tourist information and got a detailed town map, which allowed us to use quieter roads and even a cycle lane, to arrive at the hostel area
Unfortunately the hostel that we were hoping to stay at didn’t have any private rooms available. They had 2 dorm beds, but with 2 bicycles, 8 pannier bags, 2 waterproof bags containing camp gear and a whole load of stinky cycling clothes, we didn’t think we were prime dormitory candidates! This however, was far beyond my Spanish to explain to him, so I just said no thank you and we checked into a hostel just down the road.
We were both exhausted even though it was a mainly downhill day; we had still covered 90km and were feeling the effects of our long hill climbs over the past few days. We therefore had an early dinner of fajitas, from a little Mexican place that we found just up the road, washed down with a celebratory beer and were fast asleep by 8.30pm. We were all set for a good nights sleep!
