Ok, so after a little bit of a failure yesterday we thought we'd try and see another glacier! We got up early to check out the famous view from lake matheson, but guess what...it was raining!! So we headed off to the glacier walk, and it was well worth the effort this time. You could walk right up to the glacier-almost, and because it had been raining so much the rivers were flowing really fast, and there were loads of waterfalls. It was really pretty, and although this sounds daft it really did look like a river that had been frozen solid-loads of spikes, and ripples on it. We headed back to the car feeling a lot happier with ourselves, and began the drive down the rest of the coast, and then inland to Wanaka. You have to follow the road down to a place called Haast, and then turn inland-and go through the 'gates of Haast', which was actually almost as imposing as it sounds!! There is a really big, fast flowing river that carves through the mountains and hills surrounding it, and creates a really cool atmosphere. Then it's just a case of following the road until you reach Wanaka, which is a little lakeside resort. It was really pretty here, as the lake is surrounded by lots of snow-topped mountains. During the winter Wanaka is the gateway to three different ski resorts, and during the summer it's all about the water sports! We got here fairly late in the day, but managed to find somewhere to spend the night-and it had a really great view out of the window of the mountains.
