Well it has been far too long since i have written on here. Technically i have stopped traveling for a bit and am currently working on Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. It is hard to describe how beautiful and relaxing it is here. In exchange for bartending 6 nights a week i get free room and board. The Hostel is called La Iguana Perdida, and is pretty well know among the backpacker trail. It is set just off the water and has views of two three thousand meter volcanoes.
The people i work with here are pretty cool as well. There is Airek, the manager, who is from Santa Cruz California ironically. Then there are Andy and Gene the people who run the scuba diving (there is cool fresh water diving at the lake) Then me and Keillan another American girl. Last week the two Aussie boys who worked here left as well.
My daily routine consists of waking up and either going for a hike, a swim if its sunny, watching a movie, taking a boat ride to Panajachel to go shopping or spending the day reading a book in a hammock.
I live in a wood shack/cabin that is pretty nice actually. It doesn´t have electricity which is kinda nice for a change. I have candles and stuff which i enjoy. There are also a couple large spiders who periodically camp out on my walls. Although we have become good friends, they eat the bugs and we leave each other alone as long as no one decides to come on my bed.
There is a wide array of people i come in contact with every day as well. There is a sizable gringo population at the Lake. They include alcoholic Vietnam vet Bob, who likes to give me shit when he tells me to cut him off and I do. Then there is Elaine and Lee, the Yoga instructor who also swings. Then there is Heinrick the German, and many more.
Oh there is also the weekly Saturday night Cross dressing party. This is pretty much what the hostel is famous for, if i feel like it i might show you all what i look like in a dress.
I hope all is well, if anyone should feel the wish to visit, there are cheap flights to Guatemala city from NYC, DC and LA for around 300 round trip. A bed in a dorm here would run you about 5us a night and a private room about 9us. The amazing views are free as well as all the free booze i will give you.
Hasta Luego,
Geoff
